One
of my earliest recollections, before I could read, was making
up stories to go with the pictures in the Sunday newspaper’s
comic strips. I think I was born writing. My late mother always
insisted I was born talking anyway.
My home today is in the magnificent red rock country of Sedona,
Arizona. If you’ve never been there, the photo at the
top will show you what we see everywhere we look. This painting
of mine will also give you an idea.
I also think I must have been born with a love of the West and
the Southwest, although my physical body sure didn’t start
out in either of those regions. I started life in central New
Jersey, just outside of New York City. After attending college
in West Virginia and Boston, I’d had enough of winter,
and made my way to California. |

I’ve
lived most of my adult life in California, first in San Francisco,
where I grew tired of the fog (I seem to have a weather aversion),
and later in various parts of Southern California.
But as much as I loved my adopted sunny state, I didn’t
experience a visceral connection with a place until my husband
and I started traveling through the Southwest. We first visited
Sedona about twenty years before we finally moved here. Sedona
just seems to call some people. In the few years before we
relocated, we probably visited Sedona 3-4 times a year. We
knew we had to move.
Most things in my life revolve around books. In addition to
enjoying a lifelong love of reading, the way we make our living
in Sedona is by owning and operating The
Well Red Coyote, a general-interest bookstore that the
people of Sedona have voted “Best Bookstore in Sedona”
for six straight years. Here’s a photo.
I also teach writing online for the Writers’ Program
of the UCLA Extension
School. T2G Productions
in Los Angeles has released a 3-DVD writing course, Writing
Killer Mysteries with Kris Neri, which is based on my popular
mystery writing classes. |

And,
of course, I write. My latest title is MAGICAL
ALIENATION, the second book in my Samatha Brennan and
Annabelle Haggerty Magical Series, which began with HIGH
CRIMES ON THE MAGICAL PLANE, a Lefty Award nominee. I
also write the Tracy Eaton Mysteries, REVENGE
OF THE GYPSY QUEEN, DEM BONES'
REVENGE, REVENGE FOR OLD
TIMES' SAKE and the forthcoming REVENGE ON ROUTE 66.
I’ve published sixty stories at this point, some of
which were published in a short story collection, THE
ROSE IN THE SNOW, and two thrillers, NEVER
SAY DIE and DEVIL'S GAMBIT -
DEVIL'S DUE. Click for a more formal
bio or for my media page.
While
words consume most of my life and my time, in one form or
another, I also love to hike Sedona’s red rock trails.
And when I can free up a bit of extra time, I like to draw
and paint. Here’s a recent figure drawing I did.
If you’re ever in Sedona, stop by The Well Red Coyote
to say “hi.” And thanks for stopping by my virtual
presence today. |
